Wedding Wording Etiquette

 Wedding Wording Etiquette

Wedding etiquette tips to keep in mind:

  • Eliminate abbreviations except for social titles (Mr. & Mrs. & Ms.)
  • Jr. and Sr. can be abbreviated
  • Zip codes are omitted from the invitation copy
  • The time of the event is spelled out (ex: 3:30pm should be written, half past three o’clock)
  • Middle names are optional but never abbreviated
  • The British spelling of “honour” is the most traditional, however you can use the American spelling “honor”.  Both are correct.  However, if you do choose to use “honour” use it consistently through your wedding suite. (ex: If you use “honour” on your invitation, use “The favour of a reply” on the response card)
  • When the ceremony is in a house of worship, use the phrase “request the hono(u)r of your presence.”  Otherwise, “request the pleasure of your company” is the correct verbiage for a non-religious ceremony outside a house of worship.
  • When a Roman Catholic Mass is part of the ceremony, use the phrasing “request the hono(u)r of your presence / at the Nuptial Mass Uniting…
